On the occasion of the fall of Sokhumi the acting chairman of Batumi City Council – Lasha Sirabidze and city council members paid tribute to the memory of heroes who died for the territorial integrity of Georgia and laid a wreath on the memorial. The ceremony was attended by the representatives of Ajara AR Government, Supreme Council of Ajara and members of public society.
September 27 is one of the most tragic day in the recent history of Georgia. 23 years ago, September 27, 1993 was the day when Sokhumi fell.
The military conflict in Abkhazia started on August 14, 1992. The conflict between Georgian government forces and Abkhazian separatist forces lasted for 13 months and 13 days.
According to the unspecified data more than 10 thousand Georgian soldiers and peaceful citizens were killed. 300 thousand refugees from Abkhazia were left homeless.
On the day of Sokhumi fall Russian occupants and Abkhazian separatists shot the Chairman of the Supreme Council of Abkhazia- Zhiuli Shartava and 30 Georgians.
By the initiative of Batumi City Council more than 70 families affected by the Abkhazian war, were given one-time financial assistance in the amount of 300 GEL
